Spent an informative day on June 28 at the Mystery Writers of America workshop in Philadelphia and had the good fortune to sit next to a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter who was covering the event and who won my eternal gratitude by spelling my name right in his article--click here to read!
If I hadn't been taken by surprise by his request for an interview, I probably wouldn't have used the phrase "self published" which still carries unsavory "vanity press" connotations for some, or suggests someone who decides in a misguided rush of nostalgia to publish his college-era personal journal. I would instead have used "independently published" to describe the scenario where, as I did, the author / publisher uses experts for cover design, editing, etc. to ensure a high quality product for the reader. Now I'm working on my PR schtick so I will be better prepared when other such opportunities arise!
